the police removed #oocupyguguta for now… but we will be back

The police has dismantled the tent at #OccupyGuguta: it cleared the whole Central Park because of the “presence of state officials” for the Independence Day.

The video of the clearing and the negotiation with the police can be watched here:

The permit to dismantle the place (and to suspend all the protest actions) was issued by Ruslan Codreanu, the interim mayor of Chisinau. Obviously the decision was not published on the Chisinau City Hall website in the corresponding section (which means it was issued on August 24th only to be used…on 27th).

Earlier today, a group of citizens that were staying overnight at the Stefan cel Mare Monument were cleared in the first hours of the morning…

Here are some photos from the police action.

#OccupyGuguta has posted a picture in which a protester show the traces of police’s violence on his body:

Later, when the officials (the president of Moldova, Igor Dodon, the prime minister Pavel Filip, the speaker Andrian Candu, the US ambassador James Pettit, the EU ambassador Peter Michalko) approached Stefan cel Mare monument, #occupyguguta has “greeted” them with drums and noise.

This is how “independence” and “democracy” are looking like in Chisinau right now: the right to assembly and to protest was suspend in order to make place for the official celebration.

We will post updates as the events unfold.
